A big thank you to Michelle Trachtenberg

Kalynn

I was shocked to learn of Michelle Trachtenberg's untimely passing on February 26, 2025, at the age of 39. I wanted to take a moment to reflect on her life and career because she played a pivotal role in many of the movies and tv shows that inspired some of my own work.

Trachtenberg was known for her memorable roles in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Gossip Girl," but I think her role, capturing hearts as the inquisitive Harriet M. Welsch in the 1996 film "Harriet the Spy.", is the one that had the biggest impact on me.

For many, "Harriet the Spy" was more than just a movie; it was an inspiration. The film follows Harriet, an 11-year-old aspiring writer and spy, whose curiosity leads her to document the world around her in her trusty notebook. Trachtenberg's portrayal of Harriet was both authentic and relatable, igniting a passion for storytelling and mystery-solving in countless young viewers.

Personally, watching "Harriet the Spy" was a transformative experience. This movie came out when was thirteen and navigating some tough times. I’d previously torn through every Nancy Drew mystery and was delighted to find another head strong, mystery-solving protagonist to pin all my own imaginings on. Trachtenberg's embodiment of Harriet's determination and courage resonated deeply. The film taught me the importance of observation, the thrill of uncovering secrets, and the power of writing—a lesson that has stayed with me throughout my life.

Beyond "Harriet the Spy," Trachtenberg's versatility as an actress was evident in her diverse roles. As Dawn Summers in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," she navigated the complexities of adolescence amidst a supernatural backdrop. In "Gossip Girl," her portrayal of the enigmatic Georgina Sparks added depth and intrigue to the series. Her performances showcased a range that few could match, endearing her to audiences across genres.

I find it moving that although her acting credits are vast and varied, the outpouring of grief has highlighted that what people valued most about her was her friendship, her humor, and her love for all those who adored her.

Michelle Trachtenberg's portrayal of Harriet the Spy not only entertained but also inspired a generation of young writers and dreamers. Her dedication to her craft and the authenticity she brought to her roles will be remembered and cherished. As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the stories she told and the inspiration she provided.

"There's as many ways to live as there are people in this world. And each one deserves a closer look."
